In all the years I’ve been working in the marketing field this is the statement I find myself using most frequently. “It’s hard to read the label from inside the bottle.” It’s not a statement I can take credit for because I heard it or read it at some point in my career, but it’s relevant in so many cases.
What does it mean exactly? Well, you go to work, you do your job, you go home. Your work day is filled with stuff. Answering the phone, going to meetings, preparing reports, dealing with staff, etc. You’re consumed with your day-to-day, so when opportunities arise or problems occur we apply patchwork solutions, or the opportunity gets away on us.
It’s important for everyone – business owners and employees alike, to get out of the bottle! Take a step back from the day-to-day and look at what you’re doing, why you’re doing it and how you’re doing it. Look at the tasks, the processes, problems and opportunities and reposition yourself. It’s amazing how different things look from outside the bottle! It’ll give you a whole new perspective on your day-to-day and allow you to go after opportunities and discover the root of problems instead of just patching up symptoms.
